The-DC-Ladies-2014-Food-Truck-ReviewIt has been a long year that somehow went by super-fast.  I have been eating off DC food trucks since they first came onto the scene over five years ago and am always excited to try new ones.  With so many trucks out there it becomes hard to try them all.  This year, I tried many new (to me) trucks and had some great dishes.  Here are the top five dishes I had on food trucks this year.

1. My favorite dish from a food truck this year was the kimchi chicken teriyaki sub from the Wassub food truck.  The main reason is that it contained two of my favorite things in this world: chicken and kimchi.  Kimchi is a pickled cabbage that is popular in Korean dishes and I would put it on anything.  I really need to try and make it sometime….but anyway that was the main reason I not only tried, but loved this dish.  The kimchi chicken teriyaki sub is teriyaki chicken topped with provolone, kimchi, and a fried egg (another thing I love).  I got the sub with their sexy sauce which is the medium heat sauce of their three sauces.  Not only was this my favorite food truck dish, it was also the messiest meal I had this year.  Do not wear white when eating this sub.  It is a crunchy, spicy, and delicious sub and I will definitely be having it again in 2015.

2. My second favorite dish this year was the spicy pork rice box from the Korean BBQ Taco truck.  As you can probably tell from my first two favorite dishes, I really like Korean food.  The spicy pork rice box is spicy Korean-style pork over white rice with a side salad with ginger dressing, two chicken wings with a spicy glaze, and two fried cheese rolls with spicy mayonnaise.  Everything in the rice box was delicious.  A lot of food trucks have combination boxes where most of the items will be good but one or two are just ok or not good but that was not the case with the Korean BBQ Taco truck.  The pork and wings were spicy but the cheese rolls, rice, and salad balance it all out.  Just a very balanced and delicious meal.

3. Another one of my favorite dishes this year was the Paris sandwich from the SUNdeVICH food truck.  The Paris sandwich has ham, eggs, gruyere cheese, dijonnaise, greens, and tomato on a fresh baked roll from a local DC bakery.  I opted for the combo which came with chips (I got the jalapeño chips) and a drink.  As mentioned above, I love a good fried egg and I am also a big fan of ham and gruyere cheese so I knew this sandwich had potential.  The Paris definitely delivered in the taste department.  The nice runny egg melded perfectly with the warm ham and cheese and the greens and tomato gave a nice freshness.  I will definitely go back to SUNdeVICH to try one of their other sandwiches next year.

4. Besides Korean food, I am also a huge fan of Greek food which is why the combo rice plate from the DC Greek food truck was another one of my favorite dishes this year.  The combo plate came with both chicken and gyro (lamb) meat covered in a delicious tzatziki (cucumber and yogurt) sauce over fluffy rice and a large Greek salad with feta cheese and balsamic vinaigrette.  The meat was tender, the rice well cooked, the dressing was nice and tangy, and the feta cheese rounded it all out.  The chicken was a tad on the dry side but the tzatziki helped with that and it was still one of my favorite food truck meals.

5. A review of my favorite meals would not be complete without dessert.  I tried a few dessert trucks this year but my favorite dessert was the Baltimore Bomb pie from the Dangerously Delicious Pie truck.  The pie is made with Berger cookies which are fudgy cookies that are a Baltimore specialty.  The pie has the cookies in a vanilla custard which makes it taste like a chocolate chip cookie pie.  The pie was very good and hit my sweet tooth in just the right spot; sweet but not too sweet.  When I have a hankering for something sweet in 2015 I will be on the look-out for the Dangerously Delicious Pie truck

Happy New Year and here is to more delicious food truck meals in 2015!
